Saint Francis was born in Assisi, Italy in 1182. He lived and preached a life of poverty and love of God to all men. He founded the religious Order of the Franciscans; with St. Clare, he founded the Order of the Poor Clares; and the Third Order for lay people.
He also had the power to work miracles. He is well known for loving all creatures and the birds and animals obeyed his commands. There is a great story about St. Francis and the Wolf that can be found in Legends of Saints and Beasts by Ann Marie Jauss or you can read it here.
We will celebrate with animal crackers and this yummy pumpkin nutella dip.
I have a special devotion to St. Francis because my mom loved this saint. She was always feeding the birds (and squirrels). My dad loved the Prayer of St. Francis would listen to the song often.
Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is error, the truth;
Where there is doubt, the faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
